new flu symptoms: This ‘super flu’ could cause widespread serious illness, health experts say. Now for a deeper dive into a new flu strain that health experts have warned could make for a nasty flu season. The new strain is called subclade K
..
And it's already spreading overseas. Japan has already declared an influenza pandemic, and the flu season in the UK has started a month earlier than usual.

ABC News medical contributor Dr Alok Patel joins us with what you need to know about this. Dr Patel, thank you for joining us again.

How is this strain different from other flu strains, and why are health experts worried about it? Important questions, Ike. So basically, when young people think about

What a subclade actually is, the word literally means under the branch, and it's in the family tree of influenza viruses. So, when people hear these letters and numbers, such as H3N2, it means influenza A.

When there are changes in these surface proteins, the proteins on the outside of the virus, that's when we subclade. So, subclade K hemimutations on these proteins. People are paying attention.

Because we're seeing the first cases and we're seeing more cases in places like you mentioned around the world, with subclade K now being identified in Japan, Canada, and the UK.

It's not yet clear what this might do to the United States, but it's certainly why the global influenza surveillance system, yes, is there, is so high.

Is the vaccine effective against this new strain? So the flu vaccine was actually made in a different subclade later in the spring, and researchers are concerned that there are some mutations on the protein.

That could make this flu vaccine less effective.   new flu symptoms However, early data suggest that there is some effectiveness, and one important thing that I want everyone to understand is that the flu vaccine is not perfect.

The percentage of effectiveness of Novovaxin is different from the initial UK figures, and researchers think that this flu vaccine is likely to protect you and keep you from ending up in hospital.

Or getting seriously ill this season. So, it's still a great idea to get the shot if you haven't already. Okay.

Now, with this flu shot, what else can people do to protect themselves? You know, yeah, you mentioned getting the flu shot, but this is also a big surprise,

If you're sick, please stay home. You don't necessarily know what those symptoms really are. This is especially important if you're at high risk,

If you're going to see someone who is at high risk, because someone who might just have a cold might not think it's a big deal, but it could be devastating to someone else.

Is flu treatment effective during flu treatment?

Isn't the purpose of vaccination to protect you from getting the flu? So does the flu shot make the flu less severe during treatment? What should be done now? Thanks for HAVINGME.MORNING. Well, the flu shot is a great match for this subclade cave area.

new flu symptoms That you're talking about, but it's better than no protection, and it has some protection. That's why it's still critical that we all get vaccinated.

Isn't the purpose of vaccination to protect you from getting the flu?

And that's because the vaccination isn't necessarily meant to protect you from getting the flu. It's meant to prevent you from getting sick or being hospitalized.

So everyone in the 4 THECDC. It's 6 months, and adults should really get this flu vaccine at a lower risk than you are. So this particular type. What else to do? The same. Are they worse? The symptoms are the same, but they're more severe. So you're going to have a fever, a runny nose, and a cough.

Body aches, but they're probably more severe. So the fever is probably higher. A high temperature or muscle aches can make body aches more painful. So that's a concern.

Because these are more serious symptoms, ITCAN can also increase the risk of being hospitalized. There can be some complications. So you may be more likely to become dehydrated,

You may be more likely to go to the hospital. If you think it's really important for us to be careful and try to prevent the flu, you know,

The flu vaccine is already out there, and people are getting it. It's too late to somehow get it into the vaccine.

How long does it usually take?

It's not too late to get a flu shot. So I recommend it to everyone out there. If you haven't gotten a flu shot, please get a flu shot. It usually takes Amy 2 weeks for your body to have antibodies to protect you from it again.

So remember, peak flu season is really January and February. So we're only in mid-December. So actually, in the morning, that's the best time to get a flu shot and go. SOI recommends that everyone go

And get it. And I'm just wondering about that particular variable, how they can add it in to help build up what would normally happen after that.

The flu season ends with next year's flu shot to include this type. What does that end up being? More news that you'll see around February,

Public health experts are coming in, and you know, trying to come up with a formula for the flu shot. So this is the reason some haven't had the flu shot, because remember when K was first detected in June. Before the flu shot

It's actually already been formulated. So this will definitely be taken into account for next year's flu shot. But unfortunately, the original SOMEPKS 9, including this wash shot.  new flu symptoms

But the H 3 N 2. form is split, and some of the A 3, 2 is catorage, which is why there is still protection, even though it's not quite right. Yes. Get your shot. That's on my list.

2 things to do. Wash your hands. We hear this all the time when we go into winter. We should. We do this all the time. What other advice do you have for people to stay healthy right now?

Well, I want to wash my hands in the morning because just looking at them for 20 seconds is often a message.  new flu symptoms
